WE HELP ARTISTS DEVELOP THEIR WORK AND CAREERS IN THE FIELD OF MODERN OPERA
Working closely with Fundación Williams and other partners we offer travel aid, scholarships and production as well as creation funds to Argentine, Latin American and International artists.
“WINTER SCHOOL 2023”
Advanced training and artistic experimentation program aimed at creators of all disciplines interested in opera as a contemporary genre.
NEW CALL AND SCHOLARSHIPS FOR ARTISTS UP TO 45 YEARS OLD IN BUENOS AIRES (SEPTEMBER 2023)
‣
Atlanticx and the Williams Foundation are pleased to announce a new call for the "Winter School", an intensive seminar that seeks to promote the work of emerging interdisciplinary artists in the field of New Opera.
This fifth edition will be held at the Williams Foundation headquarters (in Buenos Aires) between September 4 and 9, 2023.
If you are a director, dramaturg, artist, sound artist, performative artist, designer, composer, experimental musician or filmmaker / video artist, and you are interested in opera, we propose a week with exclusive dedication to re-think the modes and limits of the genre.
We will do this through courses, master classes and tutorials that we design together with a group of national and international specialists and professionals, among whom are:
Liana Brazil (Designer and technologist, Rio de Janeiro) Eloísa Canton (Theatrical producer, Buenos Aires) Mariana Obersztern (Director and playwright, Buenos Aires) Mariano Pensotti (Director and playwright, Buenos Aires) Benjamin Piekut (Musicologist, New York) Fernando Rubio (Director and playwright, Buenos Aires) Oscar Strasnoy (Composer, Berlin)
‣
The School's main objective is to promote the ideation of interdisciplinary co-creation projects related to the genres of the New Opera Festival: contemporary opera and musical theater, centrally, but we are also interested in the development of projects that make crossings between these central disciplines with others, such as dance, experimental film, installation, or performance, for example.
In this sense, the School is integrated into the central program of Atlanticx. It is the articulation of a professional development platform for innovative scenic creators that, for each cohort, has a duration of two years, with the following itinerary:
Instance # 1, training (Winter School, intensive seminar)
Instance # 2, laboratory (Atlanticx creation and experimentation residencies)
Instance # 3, production (New Opera Festival)
‣
The School focuses on three types of activities: the discovery and criticism regarding previous work by colleagues, educational training through courses and masterclasses, and, finally, the elaboration -via tutorials- of a new collaborative and interdisciplinary creation project related to opera. Winter School is a bi-lingual school, with classes to be held in Spanish and/or English.
In relation to the courses, the staff of teachers is designing content in the form of bibliographies, conversation and exercise formats. We do this with a view to working specifically on the "critical points" or aesthetic parameters that FNOBA 2024 seeks to explore with particular emphasis:
The voice and the human body as a space for contemporary artistic experimentation.
The inquiry into oral (or "aural" according to Benjamin Piekut), technological or non-written creation aesthetics.
The critical vision in the planning of the production of the projects, including proposals for sustainability and audience expansion as well as ideas about the documentation and circulation of work.
‣
The projects worked on within the framework of the School, both from the 2023 edition and the next year, will be invited to present a dossier with a view to competitive inclusion in the Atlanticx residencies (instance # 2 of the program) and also towards a complete production in the next edition of the New Opera Festival of Buenos Aires, to be held in 2024 (instance # 3 of the program).
‣
Considering in particular the mission of Atlanticx (to promote the development of young artists), the Winter School is aimed at artists from all over the world up to 45 years old and from all disciplinary backgrounds.
Likewise, the Winter School offers scholarships (to interested parties and according to the merit order stipulated by the admission jury) of 100% and 50%.
The seminar has a cost of $120,000 (or USD 500 for foreigners). This value includes registration and access to all academic and training activities carried out during the Winter School week. Finally, it should be clarified that for Argentine students who live outside the metropolitan area, scholarships include payment of transportation to CABA.
